@CriticalJazz: Esa Pietila Karhea Fiasko 2009

@CriticalJazz: Esa Pietila Karhea Fiasko 2009: Karhea review / CriticalJazz, USA (Brent Black)

Karhea is a landmark release for one of the finest saxophone player that I have had the exception to hear. With the exception of Ivo Perleman, Esa Pietila is now hitting his creative genius. Standing the test of time finds Esa Pietila simply aging like fine wine. Pietila gets better and more robust with age. A no brainer for sure...

Two new recordings done - New Quartet & Solo Saxophone

New recordings

Hello!

The fall season has started nicely! I did two new recordings in september, one with my new Finnish Quartet which includes drummer Olavi Louhivuori, pianist Aki Rissanen and Antti Lötjönen on bass. We had a lot of fun and good time at studio - the vibe & the flow of music was really cool! Also, an other recording was done, it´s a live recording of my solo concert at famous Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki. The church is world wide known of its very original & modern design and from its very good acoustics. I´m very much looking forward to release these cd´s during the winter season 2012.

Peace!

Press release

Begun in 2011, The Esa Pietilä – Jeff Siegel Duo bridges two cities New York City & Helsinki. Their juicy freejazz flows, crunchy polyrythmical textures, diverse sound ambients and spiritual meditation-like chorals bring in a completely personal way of duo improvisations taken into action. With New York City based drummer Jeff “Siege” Siegel and saxophonist Esa Pietilä (Helsinki, Finland) the line-up´s talents span across a multitude of musical ideas. The upcoming album was recorded at the famous NRS Studio in New York in 2011. The album´s name “Out Doors” reflects to multiple meanings of opening and exploring “new doors” and spaces for playing “out” and the free form improvised jazz.

Both Jeff Siegel and Esa Pietilä are widely known for their multiple projects plus improvisation skills and visionary approach to music. The upcoming album, Out Doors, finally brings together the two musicians and their original and distinctive styles of jazz and free form improvisation. The album's material contains loosely sketched pieces by Siegel and Pietilä plus pure collective improvisation.

The intense instrumentation of only drums & saxophone, brings many possibilities for new musical expression. The absence of a harmonic instrument gives more room and space for free expression with Pietilä ́s' multi‐faceted style of saxophone sound merging with the multiphonics that can be created by an experienced player ‐ massive, almost impossible sound world of the instrument’s capabilities. Drummer Siegel adds striking colours and fascinating drum textures to the common pot of their communication.

“The fact that we come from different cultural and musical backgrounds adds just the right amount of friction and tension to our music. For us, it was an extremely interesting recording, since we had not played before, but were familiar to each others style and expression. “The elements of surprise and musical risk‐taking is very much present on the album, since it was recorded with no rehearsing beforehand – the result is something very unusual. That's a risky situation to take, but sometimes that ́s the best thing to do, to be creative ,” says Pietilä.

Drummer Jeff “Siege” Siegel has worked with a virtual “who’s who” of artists. Siegel’s diverse career has also led him to perform and/or record with legends such as Ron Carter, Kenny Burrell, Jack DeJohnette, Benny Golson, Sheila Jordan, Helen Merrill, Mose Allison, Dave Douglas, Stefon Harris, Kurt Elling, Ravi Coltrane, Ryan Kisor, Steve Turre, Arthur Rhames and John Esposito. He has worked in the avant garde world as well with Wadada Leo Smith, Baikida Carroll and others. Siegel has also performed and collaborated with many European musicians including Johannes Enders, Michael Lutzeier, Esa Pietila, Jaromir Honzak, Julian & Roman Wasserfuhr, Torsten Goods, Harry Sokol, Cecile Verny and Nils Wogram. He is leader of the Jeff "Siege" Siegel Quartet. He co‐leads the groups of The Jeff Marx/Jeff "Siege" Siegel Duo and Marx, Siegel and Esposito. Siegel has been described in Jazz World Magazine as a “brilliant drummer”, while lauded in Modern Drummer for his “forward energy and abundantly attractive ideas”. “His playing is always tasteful whether it be in forceful, intense situations or in quiet, supporting roles.

New recording of the "4 Streams Quartet" coming in on next august!

Hello folks,

It´s now confirmed that we will do a new recording for CD with my "4 Streams Quartet" on next august. The group is ECM artists Iro Haarla -piano, Uffe Krokfors - bass, Markku Ounaskari - drums and myself. The music will be mostly my own original compositions on which I´m working right now...there will of course be a lot of improvisation too - both collectively and soloist-wise. I will be concentrating to write the music for this recording in some new way which is little bit hard to describe here but it will be at least much more avant garde, and written with the idea of thinking about the individuals in the quartet and their charasteristics as performers and their own sound in mind. It will be more like composing for  small orchestra since our style is many ways like playing a symphony on which we also improvise along...it has been a real pleasure to work with these excellent artists on the past few year. We will then continue performing more in Europe & internationally after the release of the CD.

Looking forward doing this !

-Esa
